Owner, Tri-State Geese Patrol

# Bill Belward

Bill owns Tri-State Geese Patrol and writes everything published under Field Notes. The business moves Canada geese off client property without harming them, using trained Border Collies, across Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York.

## The work behind the writing

Everything on this site comes out of the same job: standing on somebody else’s property, working out why a flock has settled on it, and running a program that changes the birds’ reading of the place. A Canada goose that has used a site for several seasons behaves differently from one that arrived last month, and almost every useful answer starts from that difference.

Tri-State Geese Patrol runs more than one crew, so a property ninety minutes from base gets the same recurring schedule as one fifteen minutes away rather than a thinner version of it. On a program whose whole mechanism is consistent repetition, that is not a detail.

## What he works on

- ### [Border Collie goose abatement](https://tristategeesepatrol.com/services/border-collie-goose-abatement/)

Repeated, scheduled visits that teach a resident flock to read the property as a place a predator patrols.

- ### [Habitat modification](https://tristategeesepatrol.com/services/habitat-modification/)

Changing what the ground offers, at the water and grass edge, so the site stops being worth settling on in the first place.

- ### [Consultation and program design](https://tristategeesepatrol.com/services/consultation-and-program-design/)

A read of the site and a written scope, including where the work sits against state and federal rules.

## How these field notes are written

Every field note is written for somebody with the problem in front of them right now, and every claim in one that is not our own observation is linked to the source it came from. Those sources are the wildlife agencies and the universities: Connecticut DEEP, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, MassWildlife, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA APHIS, the FAA, and research from Cornell, Penn State and others. The four notes published so far carry between nineteen and twenty-three such links between them.

Two things follow from that, and both are deliberate. Where the rules differ by state, the notes say so rather than averaging them into one tidy answer. And where a number is not established, it is left out. Timelines and visit counts are set per site after somebody has walked it, so you will not find a figure here that was produced before anyone had seen your ground.
